The play begins with , Antonio, and Alonso talking with the Boatswain and his crew, who are in a state of panic during a violent storm at sea. The ship is wrecked, and the men are stranded on an island. The storm is created by Prospero, who has been using magic on the island for the 12 years since he was exiled from Milan. He is helped by his magical servant, Ariel. Caliban, the son of the evil witch Sycorax who trapped Ariel in a tree, hates working for Prospero.

First meeting
Prospero orchestrates the shipwreck to bring his brother, Antonio, and the King of Naples, Alonso, to the island. Ferdinand is separated from his father, Alonso, during the storm and comes across Miranda and Prospero. He and Miranda immediately fall in love, which is all part of Prospero’s plan to make his brother realize his wrongdoing. However, Prospero pretends to oppose their union at first to test Ferdinand’s sincerity.

Betrayal
Alonso, Antonio, , and their men wander across the island. Alonso believes that Ferdinand is dead. Ariel plays a magical song that causes all the men, except for Antonio, to fall asleep. Taking advantage of this, Antonio triesto kill Alonso and seize the throne of Naples. However, Ariel wakes the King just in time to stop the plot.

Revenge
Miranda and Ferdinand meet and confess their love for each other, agreeing to marry. Prospero, however, arranges a ghostly banquet that suddenly appears and disappears before Alonso, Antonio, . Ariel then appears as an avenging harpy and declares that the men have been brought here to be punished for their wrongdoings against Prospero, leaving them terrified and helpless.

Exile
Prospero gives his blessing for Ferdinand and Miranda’s marriage and provides them with a vision of the goddesses Iris, Juno, and Ceres. Meanwhile, Stefano, Trinculo, and Caliban make their way into Prospero’s bedroom, smelling of the swamp where Ariel led them. Trinculo and Stefano, distracted by fine clothes seemingly laid out for them, ignore Caliban’s protests. Prospero and Ariel, disguised as spirits in the form of dogs, enter and drive them out.

Reconciliation
Prospero feels remorse for having imprisoned Alonso and Antonio. He tells Ariel to bring them to a place where he performs his final spell and reveals his true identity. Alonso apologizes, and Prospero shows that Ferdinand and Miranda are alive and well. He proposes that everyone will return to Milan. Prospero then frees Ariel from servitude and breaks the spell that bound Caliban to him. Realizing his mistakes, Caliban repents, and Prospero forgives him and the sailors. They prepare the ship for departure. Prospero asks the audience for their applause, requesting to be set free.
