In the exposition we learn that it was a stormy knight in a small parlor. They lived on a road with only two other houses. We also learn about the characters Mrs. White, Mr. White, and their son, Herbert.

Good God, you are mad.

In the rising action, a new character is introduced name Sargent Morris. The Sargent has a special monkey's paw that is able to grant three wishes to three men. Sargent Morris tells the White family about the monkey's paw. The Sargent warns the White's that the monkey's paw is bad. Mr. White then wishes for 200 pounds so he can pay of his house. While he is wishing, the monkey's paw moves in his hand. The next morning they wake up and Herbert leaves and goes to work. They still do not have 200 pounds.
Resolution
I wish for the evil knocking to stop.
Herbert! Herbert!
A man from the place that Herbert works at walked in, and he told the White's that their son had died. The man said that they would like to give the White's compensation. The 200 pound compensation answered the White's first wish.
In the falling action, the White's first bury their son, Herbert. The days are long and depressing for them, and they barley even talk to each other. Mrs. White wakes up and realizes that they still have two more wishes that they can make with the monkey's paw. Mrs. White demands Mr. White to go down, get the paw, and wish Herbert back alive. After he makes the wish, there is a sudden knocking at the door, and Mrs. White think that it is Herbert.
In the falling action, Mrs. White runs down stairs and trys to open the door for Herbert. She can't unlock the door because she isn't tall enough. Meanwhile, Mr. White scrambles to find the monkey's paw and make an unknown wish. Right as Mrs. White opens the door, the knocking stops and nobody is there.
