Storyboard Text

  • Hey Emily, how come when I kicked the soccer ball it stopped when it hit the net?
  • Because of Newtons First Law of motion. All object in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon an unbalanced force.
  • Newton's First Law of Motion (Inertia)An object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion remains in motion at constant speed and in a straight line unless acted on by an unbalanced force.
  • s=d/t
  • Interesting, and what causes this?
  • Newton's second law of motion pertains to the behavior of objects for which all existing forces arenotbalanced. The second law states that the acceleration of an object is dependent upon two variables - the net forceacting upon the object and the mass of the object
  • This is caused by inertia- the tendency of an object to do what it is already doing.
  • f=mxa
  • In other words, the ball is in motion and the unbalanced force, which is the net, causes the ball to stop.
  • THAT'S RIGHT!
  • What if the object is at rest and I kick it?
  • P=mv or Mass x Velocity
  • The ball was at rest because of gravity, and you are the unbalanced force. The ball was originally at rest but you, applied a force to the ball causing it to move.
  • Newton’s first law states that if a body is at rest or moving at a constant speed in a straight line, it will remain at rest or keep moving in a straight line at constant speed unless it is acted upon by a force.
  • So basically, the ball didn't stay at rest because it was interrupted by an unbalanced force.
  • Exactly!!
  • WOW! Sir Issac Newton is so smart to come up with the Law of Inertia
