Today marks the anniversary of AIM's formation in 1968. Dennis Banks co-founded it in response to other civil rights movements in the country.
Thank god for Dennis Banks and AIM. Before its existence, people were ashamed to be Indian!
Did you know the police would arrest Indians without cause and throw them into something called a paddy wagon?!
That's police brutality! But I heard AIM marched against the police, which helped stop police brutality.
AIM's goal was simple: For Indians to stop being treated unequally. They did not want to cause trouble, the trouble was already there!
I agree. They had specific demands. They wanted to bring back their old ways and demonstrate who they were.
You're right. They wanted to have a review of the Dick Wilson administration, and to oversight the hearings for the 1851 and 1868 treaties.
Don't forget about the US senate investigation on treatment of Indians!
It is crazy how over 2,000 Indians came to support the movement. That feels like a lot since the movement just started at the time.
Religion is a powerful thing. It is like when the Ghost Dance flourished, it was a way of keeping the cultures alive.
Yes, and AIM continues to be a spiritual movement that returns Indians to their traditional ways!
A movement needs to happen in order for a change to occur.
