  • It is impossible to say how first the idea entered my brain; I think it was his eye! I made up my mind to kill the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.
  • Who's there?
  • When I had waited a long time, very patiently, I resolved to open a little crevice in the lantern. you cannot imagine how a singledim ray, like the thread of the spider, shot open his vulture eye.
  • In an instant I dragged him to the floor, and pulled the heavy bed over him. I then smiled gaily, to find the deed so far done.
  • He was stone dead. His eye wouldtrouble me no more.

  • I then took up three planks from the flooring I then replaced the boards so cleverly, so cunningly, that no human eye not even his could have detected it. There was no blood spot whatsoever. A tub had caught it all—ha! ha!

  • I smiled,—for what had I to fear? The shriek, was my own in a dream. The old man, I mentioned, was absent in the country.
