  • John Brown's Raid
  • John Brown was born in the year 1800 on May 9th in Torrington, Connecticut. He was a business man in his early years, but turned into a radical abolitionist after his business failed. He was widely popular amongst abolitionist circles. He died on the 2nd of December, 1859 by execution for raiding Harper's Ferry in a attempt to cause a slave revolt in the southern states.
  • In the early months of 1859, he and his family members arrived at Harper's Ferry and began to stockpile weapons while planning the raid. Finally, in October 16th, he and his 18 men raid the armory to arm local slaves and any they meet to incite a slave revolt. However, they are slowed and then stopped by local civilians, militias, and the US marines. They enter a protracted gunfight, and several die before they surrender.
  • The raid occurred at the US military armory in Harper's Ferry on the 16th of October, 1859
  • John Brown raided the armory so he can cause a widespread slave revolt in the southern states, which would force the south to embrace abolitionism and abolish slavery, lest they be destroyed. His raid fueled a decrease for either side to compromise on their pro-slavery or abolitionist ideals, which eventually led to the civil war
  • John Brown's raid has significance to the 10 steps because his raid led to the showing of further dissatisfaction of both sides with the current status quo significantly as many people were invigorated by his actions.
