  • MONARCHY
  • All these people are under my control!
  • All hail the king!
  • In monarchy, there was usually one main ruler, which was often a king. They could create many laws and the rulers had many powers. It lasted from 2000 to 800 BCE. In a monarchy, people usually were treated decently, although depending on the king, they could use powers wrongly. However, the monarchy ended because aristocrats in many city-states overthrew the monarchy and took the power for themselves.

  • Wash my car!
  • Water my plants!
  • Cook my dinner
  • Clean my house!
  • Oligarchy contained a small group of wealthy men who all shared power. It was from 800 to 650 BCE. They would host parties where they would have slaves and hire performers to entertain them. However, in the oligarchy, life wasn't fair. The poor worked in the fields while the rich had very comfortable lives. Then, it ended because the rich would get richer, the poor would get poorer, and the poor left to go to other leaders who promised to improve their lives.

  • DEMOCRACY
  • I vote to _______
  • I vote _________
  • I also vote to _________
  • I do not agree!
  • In a democracy, everyone rules themselves. All the citizens shared ruling power and it lasted from around 500 BCE. Democracy was one of the most fair forms of government and it allowed people to vote on issues in the world. However, sometimes, powerful speakers would persuade citizens to vote unwisely. Conflicts like these led to most city-states to return to earlier forms of government, such as dictatorship and oligarchies.
