  • 1. Ordinary World
  • 2. Call to Adventure
  • 3. Refusal
  • "In his far-off home Beowulf, Higlac's/Follower and the strongest of the Geats..." (109-110}Beowulf's normal life was going into battle. He became well known due to his strength and bravery even though he was just living his everyday life.
  • 4. Mentor/Helper
  • "Proclaiming that he'd go to that famous king,/Would sail across the sea to Hrothgar,/Now when help was needed..." (114-116)Beowulf heard of the horrors Grendel was causing. He knew something had to be done so he gathered fourteen of his bravest men and sailed across the sea to offer his help to the king, Hrothgar.
  • 5. Crossing the Threshold
  • "... Now Grendel and I are called/Together, and I've come. Grant me, then,/Lord and protector of this noble place,/A single request!" (159-162)Beowulf skips the refusal step of the hero's journey. In fact, he is the person who requests the task. The person in this situation who could have refused is Hrothgar because he didn't fully trust Beowulf and his men.
  • 6. Tests, Allies, and Enemies
  • "... Wiglaf's/Mind was made up; he raised his yellow/Shield and drew his sword..." (703-705)Beowulf's helper isn't shown until the end of epic poem, but it becomes obvious who it is. Wiglaf is Beowulf's most loyal friend which is proven when he steps up to help Beowulf battle the dragon because he is losing. All of Beowulf's other men were too cowardly.
  • "... He journeyed, forever joyless,/Straight to the door, then snapped it open,/Tore its iron fasteners with a touch/And rushed angrily over the threshold." (243-246) Once Grendel came to Hrothgars home, there was no going back. It was go time, both Grendel and Beowulf were ready to kill.
  • "In the darkness, the horrible shrieks of pain/And defeat, the tears torn out of Grendel's/Taut throat, hell's captive caight in the arms/Of him who of all men on earth/Was the strongest." (309-313)Beowulf and Grendel battle. Beowulf kills Grendel with his super strength; he rips off Grendel's arm. However, this is not the end of Beowulf's journey
