  • Lets take a look on how they use their genes and cells to survive. and make this incredible transformation!
  • This Wood Frog has a special ability. It can freeze during the winter!
  • In the winter, the frog stores it's urine in it's blood. It then releases glucose that mixes with the urine, and creates homemade antifreeze! This antifreeze prevents too much water from leaving the frog's cells. If it looses more than 60% of it's water, it will die. Cells are the building blocks of life, you know!
  • After spring is over, the ice melts and they return back to normal. This organism is multicellular and has eukaryote cells. Animal cells make up this organism's body.
  • But why do they do this? They freeze in the winter because of the genes they have inherited from their parents. Inheritance means 'to pass on' or 'to give'! Their genes, or DNA, hold instructions that allow them to make the anitfreeze they use to keep their cells alive.
  • Wood Frogs resemble their parents because of these genes that they pass onto them. The DNA they give them tells their body how to form itself and what color to make it's skin!
