  • Poetry can be an excellent way show resistance to oppressive movements, such as sexism, homophobia, racism, and many more. Many writers have used linguistic strategies and oral presentation to illicit emotion.
  • This can be especially useful when speaking about forms of collective trauma, which is a traumatic experience many people went through.

  • Absolutely. In the 1940s and 50s, during Pakistani rule, the Bengali national language was refused to be recognized. To combat that, many writers and poets spoke in this language, using their words for collective mobilization.

  • Other groups of people will use poetry for other reasons. For example, queer people or women may use it to bring awareness to topics and issues they go through. 
  • And different people may have better access to get their voice heard. Class can be a big indicator. A woman with more money has more access to the tools to get her voice out their. Know your privilege and know your poetry!
