  • Finding out something was wrong with Gina was something out of a nightmare. Her parents were told to "hope for the worst" by doctors and recommended Gina to be put in a home for people with disabilites.
  • Slide: 2
  • HOWEVER, this just made them more determined to fight for Gina. After 35 days Gina's parents brought her home ready to battle for their daughter at every turn.

  • While touring a school for Gina to attend a special education program at, Mom felt things were inadequate for her daughter. This is until she saw Ms. Kathy, a special education teacher, help a nonverbal, vision, and hearing impaired child. Mom wondered why they were not given a tour of this teacher's classroom.

  • Gina was evaluated and the principal believed to her to not be appropriate for that classroom as it was "too advanced". But with mom determined to advocate for her daughter, Gina was eventually allowed to enter the class and even FLORISHED!

  • One way I can help parents is by up to date meetings regarding their concerns about their child in the classroom.

  • I would include the parents in the decision of where they think their child would thrive best in the school.

  • Asking parents what works with their at child at home and how we can translate these practices into the classroom.
