  • I speak of most disastrous chances, Of moving accidents by flood and field, Of hair-breadth 'scapes i' th' imminent deadly breach, Of being taken by the insolent foe And sold to slavery, of my redemption thence . . . And of the Cannibals that each others eat, The Anthropophagi, and men whose heads Grew beneath their shoulders.

  • Othello woos Desdemona with riveting tales of his battles and bravery. He explains to the Duke, I spoke of most disastrous chances, / Of moving accidents by flood and field, / Of hair-breadth 'scapes i' th' imminent deadly breach, / Of being taken by the insolent foe / And sold to slavery, of my redemption thence . . . And of the Cannibals that each others eat, / The Anthropophagi, and men whose heads / Grew beneath their shoulders. These things to hear / Would Desdemona seriously incline. (1.3.135-47) Othello's battle stories and tales of adventure, survival, and escape attract Desdemona to him and expand her sheltered and insular world. As a woman in Shakespeare's time, she was not permitted to fight and was relegated to the house most of the time because of strict gender roles. In modern society, however, African American women can serve in the military and have battle stories of their own to tell. As of 2013 in the United States, women are allowed to serve in combat on the front lines and show their bravery and patriotism just as men have done for centuries. Today, women, including African American women, are able to drive tanks, fly fighter jets, and command troops, and they can impress their partners from across the globe with stories of their own. They are no longer caged at home and helpless as the United States has made progress with regard to gender roles. In addition, inter-racial marriage in the United States has become far more common and generally accepted.
