  • I think the theme of the Monster Due on Maple Street is Mankind is its own worst enemy I have a couple of facts to show why I think this while studying. The first part of the evidence to support my claim is on page 76 where a group of people get into a mob and kinda raid/ spy on Les's house. And obviously, Les is mad and confronts all these people who are telling lies and theories about him. They all get into an argument going back and forth saying rumors about Les, some try defending Les and they all get into shallow water. This shows that even words people say can destroy a community or hurt people in it.My second piece of evidence is on page 82 when Charlie pulls out a gun and fires at Pete van horn out of pure rage and worriedness of a monster, charlie barely knew anything but was so fed up he killed one neighbor. This shows that people can have these types of feelings of anything and harm or kill a friend or ally. My third piece of evidence is on page 81 nearly to the end of the story we can see the small town go into flames people are yelling there is mobs everywhere, kids are crying, and everything is going downhill from there as we soon zoom out of maple street realizing the aliens were the reason all along. This shows how all these accusations and fighting can lead to elimination of people, or the pain people can feel, and it really shows we are our own enemy. In conclusion, this is my reasons of why the theme of story The Monsters Due on Maple Street. is Mankind is it's own worse enemy.
