  • Members of the Thins were acquainted with the Smiles as both groups participated in the same talent shows and performed at the same public venues. Friendly rivals, the Smiles were considered to be the more polished and vocally stronger group of the two. The Smiled disbanded in 1960, the group auditioned for Vision Music in March 1961.

  • "I Want" climbed to the top of the U.S. pop charts after its Christmas time 1964 release, making it the Chords' first number 1 hit. The single was also the first number 1 hit on the reinstated Billboard R&B Singles chart, which had gone on a fifteen-month hiatus from 1963 to 1965. The single also gave the Vision Music label its first number 1 on the Hot 100.
