  • WELCOME CLASS!!Matthias SchleidenTheodore SchwanRudolph Virchow
  • Hello class and welcome back! Today we will be learning about, and taking notes about, the three names up on the board and how they contributed to the cell theory. So take a moment to take out your notes and begin writing.
  • Matthias Schleiden
  • First we will be learning about Matthias Schleiden and what he did to contribute to the cell theory. Matthias was a German botanist, who is someone that studies plants, who discovered that all plants are made from cells in the late 1830's
  • Theodore Schwan
  • While Matthias was finding out that plants are made from cells another German scientist by the name of Theodore Schwan discovered a year later that all animals are made from cells.
  • Rudolph Virchow
  • After Matthias and Theodore founded that both animals and plants are made of cells, they couldn't agree on how cells are made. One of them thought that cells just appeared out of nowhere, and the other thought that they came from preexisting cells. It wasn't until Rudolph Virchow that we know cells come from preexisting cells. Rudolph was another German scientist who first said cells were formed from preexisting cells in the late 1850's.
  • If all plants and animals are made from cells then does this mean that I am too? It must!! I can't wait to tell everyone!!!
  • Guys!!! You'll never guess what I just learned in school today....
  • I wonder what it is?
