During an unexpected attack by rebels in a civil war-torn country, many families were separated, left behind, or even killed. Alex was travelling through an abandoned town with his mother when a group of hidden rebels emerged from nearby shrubs and began firing at the pair. They both ran the fastest they could in opposite directions, for as long as they could.
RUN!
After running for nearly 2 hours, Alex slows to a stop as realization hits; he had separated from his mother, the only one of his family members left, and was lost all alone in the middle of an unknown forest. He is in distress and immense fear, all alone, at only 10 years old. Alex's situation is similar to many other children who have fallen victim to war.
Where is my mom? I'm lost and don't know what to do! Did the soldiers get her? Is she dead? I'm really scared..
After experiencing many scenes of war cruelty and violence, children are often prone to develop severe PTSD and long-lasting trauma. Symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance, and separation anxiety are common symptoms that follow children throughout the duration of their entire life. Alex experiences physical responses to fear.
