Storyboard Text

  • As the play begins, we learn that the Montagues and Capulets hate each other. Servants of both families are getting ready to fight. Benvolio, of the Montagues, tries to break things up. Tybalt, of the Capulats, really hates the Montagues, and so he draws his word and is ready to fight. The Prince has to break things up, and he threatens them if they don't stop fighting.
  • What, drawn and talk of peace? I hate the word as I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee. Have at thee coward!
  • Part fools. Put up your swords, you know not what you do.
  • Romeo begins the play in love with Rosaline, who is not returning his love. He is depressed and spends his mornings alone and crying. Benvolio tells him there are other women in the world, and that he should go to the dance at the Capulets that night to find other women. Juliet on the other hand does not want to get married, but her father wants her to go the dance. Romeo decides to go, and when he gets there, he sees Juliet and falls in love immediately. They kiss and start their love affair.
  • Then have my lips the sin that they have took.
  • If I profane with my unworthiest hand This holy shrine, the gentle sin is this: My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand To smooth that rough tough with a tender kiss.
  • Mercutio begins Act two talking about love and that you should not blindly chase it. Romeo climbs the wall of the Capulet courtyard to see Juliet. He overhears Juliet talking about her love for Romeo. She is upset that Romeo is a Montague because their houses are enemies, so she wants them to forget about their names. They have a dialogue about if they really love each other. They end up wanting to get married to each other very quick. Juliet says she will send someone to Romeo so she can know where to go and at what time they will get married. Juliet then goes to sleep and Romeo leaves.
  • I take thee at thy word. Call me but love, and I'll be new baptised: Henceforth I never will be Romeo.
  • O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art though Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name. And I'll no longer be a Capulet.
  • Friar Laurence talks to Romeo about love and that Romeo fell in love with her for just her looks. While Friar Laurence believe Romeo may be moving to fast, he realizes that the marriage could unite the two enemy houses. In the meantime, there is a growing fight between Mercutio and Tybalt. After Juliet's Nurse gets Romeo's intent to marry her, Juliet goes to the church pretending she is going to confession. Even though Friar Laurence thinks they are moving to fast, he agrees to marry them.
  • They are but beggars that can count their worth; But my true love is grown to such excess I cannot sum up sum of half my wealth.
  • Do thou but close our hands with holy words, Then love-devouring death do what he dare. It is enough I may but call her mine.
  • Mercutio and Tybalt are arguing because Tybalt wants to know where Romeo is and it leads to a fight. Romeo arrives and Tybalt's attention goes to Romeo but Mercutio keeps the argument between them going. Romeo doesn't want to fight Tybalt because he just got married to Juliet and is married into the Capulet family. Mercutio keeps provoking the fight and eventually gets stabbed by Tybalt while the fight is being broken up. Romeo then gets into a fight with Tybalt and ends up killing Tybalt out of anger and revenge.
  • This day's black fate on more days doth depend: This but begins the woe others must end.
  • It was the nightingale and not the lark that pierced the fearful hollow of thine ear.
  • As punishment for killing Tybalt, the Prince banishes Romeo. At first, Juliet believes she was deceived by Romeo because he killed her cousin. But, then she realizes that Romeo would not have done that on purpose. Romeo would rather die than never see Juliet again, but the Friar convinces him to live and fight to get mercy from the Prince. Romeo and Juliet spend the night together, and they decide they have to find a way to be together. Capulet wants Juliet to marry Paris, but Juliet is going to find a way to escape and find Romeo.
  • It was the lark, the herald of the morn, no nightingale. Night's candles are burnt out, and jocund day stands tiptoe on the misty mountain tops. I must be gone and live, or stay and die.
