Storyboard Text

  • Gregor Johann Mendel was born on July 22, 1822 in modern day Czech Republic.
  • Rosine, I love our child, Gregor.
  • Anton, I do too!
  • Mendel excelled in school and graduated with honors at Troppau. He continued his studies at the Philosophical Institute of the University of Olmütz and graduated in 1843.
  • The move was a financial strain on his family, but it was worth it!
  • I need you to take over the farm. You are my only son.
  • In 1843, Mendel joined the Augustinian order at the St. Thomas Monastery. His father wanted Mendel to take over the family farm, but he wanted to become a monk.
  • I cannot. I want to study to become a monk.
  • In 1863, Mendel began his experiments. The monastery was a very hospitable place for Mendel to study, learn, and carry out his experiments. The outcome of his observations were the Law of Segregation and Law of Independent Assortment.
  • I've decided to choice pea plants for my experiments. They have 7 observable traits which I can manipulate.
  • The genetic experiments Mendel did with pea plants took him eight years (1856-1863) and he published his results in 1865. During this time, Mendel grew over 10,000 pea plants, keeping track of the off spring number and type.
  • I presented my work to the Brunn Society for Natural Science in 1865. My paper, Experiments on Plant Hybridization, was published in 1866. While my work was appreciated for its thoroughness, no one seemed to grasp its importance. The work was simply too ahead of its time, too contrary to popular beliefs about heredity.
  • Mendel died from a chronic case of nephritis at the age of 61. It wouldn't be until thirty years after his death that he would be named the Father of Genetics.
  • Gregor Mendel, through his work on pea plants, discovered the fundamental laws of inheritance. He concluded that genes come in pairs and are inherited as distinct units, one from each parent.
