  • "Days went by. Then weeks and months. Life was normal again. A calm, reassuring wind blew through our homes. The shopkeepers were doing good business, the students lived among their books, and the children played in the streets." pg. 6
  • Moishe begs the Jews to listen to him after he managed to escape deportation, which seemed like a miracle.
  • "He closed his eyes, as if to escape time. You don't understand, he said in despair. You cannot understand. I was saved miraculously. I succeeded in coming back."pg. 7

  • "The yellow star? So what? It's not lethal... (Poor Father! Of what then did you die?)."- This quote is significant for communicating the theme in chapter 1. It shows how the situation was far worse than they could have ever expected.
  • "Two Ghettos were created in Sighet. " -pg.11
  • Before this, the Jews are searched for valuables in the Synagogues and the Ghetto before deportation. Elie's father turns down Maria's offer to house them.
