“Can’t see it,” remarked Rainsford, trying to peer though the dank tropical night that was palpable as it pressed its thick warm blackness in upon the yacht,” states the story. This sets the mood as tropical, dark, and humid. It’s setting is on a boat in the night where is it very humid. With their conversation of the dark island, the mood would be dreadful.
Conflict
“The old charts call it “Ship-Trap Island,” Whitney replied. “A suggestive name isn’t it? Sailors have a curious dread of the place. I don’t know why. Some superstition——-“ This describes the island were General Zaroff is placed in. This gives hints that Rainsford is going to end up there sometime soon.
Climax
“We should make it in a few days. I hoppe the jaguar guns have come form Purdey’s. We should have some good hunting up the Amazon. Great sport, hunting,”The story says. This is situational irony. They were talking about how great hunting is, but it is not going to be so great when Rainsford gets on the island.
Resolution
General Zaroff pleads,”My dear fellow,” said the General enthusiastically. “Your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor chess! And the stake is not without value,eh?” The conflict is that Rainsford has to hide from Zaroff in order not to get killed. This is an external conflict.
The story describes, “He heard the hounds. Then he leaped far out into the sea…” Raainsford finally escaped General Zaroff on the third day. The conflict is out of his way.
The last sentence of this story is, “He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided.” The author left us to interpret the ending. I perceive it as Rainsford getting revenge.
