- Its 1947 and Gerta along with her 2 brothers and parents lives in Eastern Berlin. After the end of world war 2 the allies divided Berlin and germany into sections. With the west being under french, british, and american control. While East Berlin controlled by The soviet union. Life in east berlin is run by communism and you must directly loyal to the GDR. People face severe punishment and even death if caught talking about escaping the GDR or talking bad about it . But for gertas family life is even harder the Stasi ( The soviets secret police) suspect that her father was involved in partisan work or resistance group who pledge their allegiance to democracy not communism. So the y keep an extra eye on them on wrong word or action and they could get killed
- Away from the border! Keep walking and look the other way
- Now or you will be arrested !! By order of the GDR.
- if only we could live in the west instead of here under communist rule of the Soviet Union.
- Today we will learn on why the GDR is the best place. Rather than the west who will try and make you their slaves
- From now on by order of the GDR no is allowed to leave and whoever attempts to leave will face severe consequences and possibly even death
