- Hale's reputation of good sense, he is perhaps tainted by pride. He is called upon as an expert in his field, and we are told 'he felt the pride of the specialist whose unique knowledge has at last been publicly called for.
- characteristics: He is a young minister dedicated to vanquishing witchcraft, but he is also somewhat naive. He has a critical mind and strong intelligence, particularly in the study of his specialty.

- Rebecca was aprominent and respected older woman in Puritan Salem, drawn into the witchcraft trials because of her and her husband's friction with the Putnams.
- Nurse Rebecca is a wise, sensible, and upright woman, held in tremendous regard by most of the Salem community.Francis Nurse Farmer and landowner in Salem. He is a respected member of the community often called upon to settle disagreements between individuals.
