- Around the end of June each year, a significant crowd gathers in a tiny town for an annual festival. At the village square, each household head will draw one piece of paper from a box of black paper.

- Tessie Hutchinson finds herself in a conflict when she discovers that her husband, Bill, is the subject of the villagers' attention. He picked up a piece of paper with writing on it. Tessie cries that it's unfair and that Bill wasn't given enough time to select the paper he wanted by Mr. Summers.'
- The entire Hutchinson family is called to the box. Five slips of paper are placed in the box by Mr. Summers, one of which was carried by Bill Hutchinson when he was chosen.'
- The Hutchinson family members each grab a slip of paper from the box. Except for Tessie, which has a black dot penciled on it, every sheet is blank.'
- Tessie screams that it's wrong and unjust. The villagers then proceed to gather the stones they had previously amassed and around Tessie. They intend to do this before the midday lunch.'
- Tessie yells that it's unfair and wrong. Then, the people go about gathering the stones they had previously gathered and placing them around Tessie. They want to finish this before lunch at noon..'
