Les Quesnoy Social Studies

Storyboard Text

  • Le Quesnoy is a small town in Northern France. It was a peaceful town that was well protected and surrounded by thick walls and rivers. This was until the Germans came, they took all the young men of France and brought them to Germany.
  • The Germans surrounded the walls of France, preventing the citizens to escape or call for help from nearby villages. By October 1918, the war was right outside the walls of the town.
  • As all the strong powerful men were gone, the women were scared and frightened for their lives. They hid in cellars beneath their houses where they were safe although they were scarce on food and water and starved for the next four years.
  • New Zealand heard about the war surrounding the town and wanted to help the helpless so they sent troops to fight the Germans. New Zealand surrounded Germany, stopping them from escaping. Multiple times, NZ sent a plane that dropped notes telling Germany to surrender. They didn't surrender.
  • Dear Germany, Surrender :) - New Zealand
  • NZ troops threw barrels and drums on fire at the Germans, the smoke and heat blinded them and they finally surrendered. The NZ soldiers were able to climb the wall into the town without the German's seeing.
  • Le Quesnoy was saved! The citizens of the town thanked the NZ soldiers and gave them everything they could, flowers, cakes, wine and other presents. From then, the small town of Le Quesnoy and New Zealand have had a strong bond ever since.
