Fever 1793 is a book about a girl who went through a yellow fever epidemic in the 1700s. The part in the story that stands out most to me is when Mattie’s mother got sick. Mother was very protective of Mattie, but one day Mattie and her grandfather wanted to go into town. Mother let them, but on their way back, Mattie and Grandfather saw Mother being dumped on the side of the road. They brought the mother inside and put her in bed. When mother was in bed she started to throw up blood and a black fluid. Mattie tries to help Mother but she rejects her and tells her to get out. Grandfather thought she was getting too sick, so he called a doctor to get her checked. A doctor came in and checked Mother, but he said that it wasn’t yellow. He said she just had a summer cold. Grandfather didn’t think that doctor was accurate, so he called another doctor to see her again. When the second doctor came in he said that she had yellow fever and needed extra treatment. The doctor also ordered that Mattie and Grandfather needed to leave. This scene is important to the story because if Mother had never gotten sick then the rest of the story wouldn’t have happened; Mattie wouldn’t have been left alone and she wouldn’t get Nell.

That was good advice, some of it, that the physicians came up with. I don't understand why people are so afraid.
I'm happy that they are going to not ring that bell any more. Hearing that bell every time someone died was sad.

Sir, I demand you to stop. You shouldn't be bringing dead people out around us healthy people.
Mother! What happened?
