Storyboard Description

A 6 cell cartoon that talks about meteorites with a focus on the Hoba meteorite in Namibia.

Storyboard Text

  • In outer space, objects like asteroids, comets and planets collide and break in to pieces that sometimes fall to Earth.
  • Space rocks are not usually dangerous. About 100 tons fall to Earth every day and burn up in the atmosphere without causing any harm. But some can be very large, and a space rock bigger than a mile across would be catastrophic if it hit our planet.
  • Do you every worry about giant space rocks falling on us?
  • Nah! I think that's a conspiracy theory...
  • 66 Million years ago, an asteroid hitting Earth likely led to the extinction of the dinosaurs.
  • THAT WAS A BUST!!
  • Africa: 80,000 BCE
  • A huge iron meteorite made it through the atmosphere and landed in what is now Namibia. Its odd, flat shape kept it from forming a crater when it hit.
  • ?
  • When the meteorite was discovered, it weighed 66 tons. It's the largest meteorite ever found on Earth, but it used to be bigger. Because it is 84% iron, it has rusted away over time.
  • Grootfontein, Namibia: 1920
  • ?
  • Now called the Hoba, it is the heaviest naturally occurring piece of iron in the world because of its size it has never been moved. A national monument is built around it.
  • Grootfontein, Namibia: 2020
