- Lincoln Elected
- I Abraham Lincoln and I was elected president. The only way I won was because the northern states out voted the southern states.
- The South Secedes
- Attempt at Compromise
- I have a provision to protect slavery in the south of 36 30'N latitude.
- That is so dumb
- Slavery will not be extended in any new territories
- We just got a new president
- He won with 180 votes to 303 total votes.
- The Confederacy
- By February 1861, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia joined South Carolina and left the Union. They all met up in Montgomery, Alabama. They called themselves the Confederate States of America.
- The Southern people didn't trust the Republicans, So, therefore, South Carolina Left the Union and held a special convention, and voted to secede.
- Reactions to Secession
- John Crittened was making a new amendment to the constitution and all the Republicans were not happy. Though he came up with it, the leaders of the south rejected it.
- Presidential Responses
- You have no right to secede. Even though I have no power to stop you, i will not let it happen
- They chose Jefferson Davis as their president
- Many southerners welcomed secession. In Charleston, South Carolina, people rang church bells, fired cannons, and celebrated in the streets. until they got a letter that was from a South Carolinian that was very alarming.
- Lincoln was not president yet because James Buchanan's term was not over. James was telling the southerners that they had no right to secede. He even told them that he had no power to stop them.
