  • Also known as Formative Assessment. Teachers use evidence about student understanding, comprehension, and skills to inform their teaching abilities. It is an ongoing form of assessment that takes place throughout the teaching and learning process.In an intermediate Mathematics course, a teacher could administer a Kahoot quiz to gain evidence to the effectiveness of their teaching pedagogy.

  • This assessment puts the power and control with the students as they become their own assessors. Student ask questions, monitor their own learning progress, and decide what they know themselves. In an intermediate math course the students consider their learning process. A student recognizes their strength in calculating percentages but struggle with decimals.

  • Also known as Summative Assessment. Can be used to rank or grade students. Uses evidence to assess student achievement against expectations, standards, and outcomes. In an intermediate math course students are given a unit exam to determine their knowledge in relation to the curriculum expectations.

  • For assessment in Intermediate Mathematics the student responses are often definitive and objective but the method and process is where the subjectivity exists. There are multiple method to achieving the same answer. Having student show their work is crucial to assessment in Intermediate Math. Ongoing assessment is important in Intermediate Math because it can be a subject that causes frustration and anxiety when student are either overwhelmed or unengaged by the learning material. Through ongoing assessment the teacher can be flexible and adaptive to keep the students adequately challenged throughout the lesson activities.
  • There are similarities between assessment of intermediate Math and other subject area. In both math and English students are assessed on their ability to explain their thinking process. In math I ask students to express their final answer in a sentence format similar to that of English.
