4,000 years ago….According to Jewish and Christian sacred text, the Jews have a religious connection to the land and all their sacred places are located in Israel. Their Holy book says that God commanded Abraham to leave his land and go to what is now Israel. When he got there with a following of Jews the Romans kicked them out.
Anti-Semitism is the hatred of Jews. Europeans had been discriminating against Jews for centuries. Many people believe the Jews are an inferior race and held them responsible for the death of Jesus Christ. Due to the hatred against them, many Jews ended up living in poor communities through out Europe.
How the Holocaust led to the Creation of Israel
Zionism was a big part in why so many Europeans Jews emigrated to Palestine. Zionism is a movement that’s goal is to create a homeland for Jews. More specifically a homeland in Palestine secured by law. The Jewish people thought this was a great time to return back to their Holy land and they began moving to Palestine.
Israel is Created
After the Holocaust, many Jewish homes and communities were destroyed. As a result, Jews had nowhere to go or anywhere to return to. Nearly 250,000 survivors were sent to camps for displaced persons set up by Allies. People disagreed with this and began to support Zionism. The United Nations thought it was right to create a home for Jews in Palestine as a result of their suffering.
Where do I go now?
Since there were already Arabs living in Palestine, the UN members voted to divide Palestine into Jewish and Arab states. At midnight on May 14, 1948, modern-day Israel was created. Jewish people had finally gotten their own nation.
