- In chapter 1 pual bumer the narrator and his friends(19 years old),Albert which has a big mind,tyaden which is always hungry but is still skinny and is a lock smith,muller which is a highschool friend and struggles with people skills and book smart,Didgerging which is hard working,Kentoreck which is a former teacher and encouraged the boys to join and they hate him,Kat the group leader and is 40 and will do anything ,Lock smitch which is big,Kemmerich which is a highschool friend and was shot, and Leer which is a highschool friend and is girl crazy he is also 19 joined war.Aswell as other members,a unit of German soldiers fighting during World War I, resting after being relieved from the front lines.They went up with 150 soliders to the front line and came back with 80 that is why they had extra food.

- They also had 2 different lictreens that has to due with the bathroom,1st has a roof,has doors,and new recruits use it if they are shy.2nd is a box that sits on the ground with handles which was brough everywhere to use the bathroom.the soliders who use the 2nd one get more condradship with eachother.The teacher kantoreck they hate him and he encouraged the boys to join.

- many did not want to join,joseph bem a high school clasemate joined and got shot in the eye and died early in war by getting shot in the eye and gets unconscious.Joseph did not want to go and got mis leading advice, pual and his friends visit kemerich in the hopital because he had gotten shot.Kemmerich has a infection running through already and the boys know it,kemmerich also had lost his watch and asked them to find it .Mulller is at his rudest point saying he shouldnt had his wath with him and almost mentions about his leg and aks to have his boots.(he wont need them for a while).The men can see he is in pain and wants to give him pain kilers but dont wanna give it to him because others are in pain.Paul gives cigars to the conrad."iron youth"Kentoreck says it witch is unbreakable and nobody can hurt you whitch is a lie and it is a nickname he calls the soliders.
