  • Before the French Revolution, tensions were constantly high. The gap between the rich and the poor was increasing, and social hierarchy was an important factor. Class tensions were also running high, as the first and second estates were struggling for more power. The third estate was also fed up with their lack of power and privileges.
  • The reaction stage of the French Revolution was a period of intense political combat between royalist and revolutionary groups. In 1791, the Legislative Assembly passed a series of reforms intended to reduce the power of France's Estates General: a body which had been created by Louis XIV and had undermined royal authority in favor of local control of government. These reforms sought to reduce the power of the Third Estate (commoners), who dominated the Estates General. Soon thereafter, Louis XVI dismissed these reform-minded ministers and replaced them with more conservative ones.
  • The Napoleonic period, named after Napoleon Bonaparte, was a period in European history from 1804 to 1815. This is the name given by Napoleon to the reign of his Empire, during which France conquered much of Europe. The First French Empire is often called the Consulate or the First French Republic (1792–1804). The Second French Empire was formed in 1814, after Napoleon's final defeat and abdication.
