Storyboard Text

  • After he has gone weeks without contact with his friends, Charlie understands the importance the bond he created with them was to him. Charlies relationship started with him going out of his way to "participate" and try to make friends with Sam and Patrick; now Charlie has a support system.
  • “I don’t know how much longer I can keep going without a friend. I used to be able to do it very easily, but that was before I knew what having a friend was like.” (102)
  • Charlies past trauma causes him to struggle more socially. He is more passive and is willing to help and support people no matter how much of a toll it puts on himself. Charlie often puts others before himself. Towards the end of the book Charlie realizes that participating is not only making friends and going to events, but its also standing up for himself and taking care of his own needs.
  • “You can’t just sit there and put everybody’s lives ahead of yours and think that counts as love.”(143)
  • Charlies habit of putting others before himself is inevitably hurting him. Its important to take care of and stand up for yourself, which are forms of participating in your own life.
