Doug Fehler, his wife, and two grandkids went fishing on Oklahoma's Broken Bow Lake, on July 4.
Getting rescued
Doug saw the storm clouds coming, but it was more scattered and there were still a lot of other boats on the water so he decided to stay on the boat.
Waiting and worrying
All of a sudden lightning and darker clouds appear. He works on getting off of the water. But, the waves start to slam into the side of the boat and water was now getting into the boat, that was not made for this type of weather.
Reunited and what was learned
Doug was going to jump into the water to try to get them to the island, but then a ski boat found them and offered help.
Doug decided that his family would get to shore first to make sure that they would be safe and he would stay on their boat. As he was waiting for the boat to come back he couldn't help but worry that it was a mistake to split up.
After an hour later the boat had come back to take Doug back to his family. The experience left a bad impression on the family though. In the end they learned that they should check the weather, make sure the boat is in good condition, and to make sure that they are taking safety precautions when on the water like a life jacket.
