- In the book "Can't Hurt Me" by David Goggins, he lived in a very nice home in Buffalo. His family had a vegetable garden and fancy cars. They fit into the upscale neighborhood very well. But as David says, "glossy surfaces reflect much more than they reveal."
- Davids childhood was a nightmare. His Father was a pimp and alcoholic. He beat David's Mom while he and his brother would watch. David's Father would also beat he and his brother. It was a very strict household with a lot of chores and rules. David's Mother knew she had to get herself and her sons away from this mad man. She started making plans to leave.
- Get to work you bums!Start mopping the floor!
- The family's neighbor, Betty, showed David's Mother a way to get out. The first step was getting her a credit card. She packed very little and prepared to leave. Instead of going to the highway, she drove to a house Betty had set up for her. That gave them time to avoid David's Father and eventually they would find their way to David's grandparents house in Indiana.
- I'm leaving your Father. You two can stay or you can come with me.
