  • Four Score and Seven Years ago...
  • In 1828 the Federal Government passed the Tarif of Abominations which increased the tax on foreign goods to almost fifty percent. The southern states, angered by the tariff because it hurt their economy, called it unconstitutional and threatened succession if the tax was enforced. This was the major cause because it was the first time we hear mention of succession and the first time the conflict between the north and south is made public.

  • Burn all the crops! We must stop the south from recieving suppplies!
  • This was the location of the first shots of the war. President Lincoln sent an armed naval force to resupply a fort in South Carolina. Confederate leaders took this as an act of war and on April 12, 1861, Confederates opened fire on the fort and kept up the barrage for two days. No one was killed during those two days but eventually, the North surrendered the fort marking the beginning of the long and bloody war
  • The End of the War 
  • Sorry, Lee. You fought well but the war is over, go home 
  • In the bloodiest battle of the war, the North was able to push back General Lee and win a vital victory. After a failed offensive by Lee to invade the North, and after 50,000 + deaths on each side, Lee retreated. The south from then on was much too weak to mount an offensive. It was also here that Lincoln gave the Famed Gettysburg Adress that became a morale boost that helped the North continue to fight.

  • Union General William Sherman desired a quick end to the war and so he decided to march about 300 miles through the South and waging a total war. His campaign left crops and homes destroyed and cost almost 100,000,000 in damages. The southern morale was also depleted and his march showed that the south could not stop the north from even walking in their land.
  • In April of 1865, General Lee of the South and General Grant of the North met in the Appomattox Courthouse to discuss the Souths Surrender. Lee and his soldiers laid down their weapons and returned home, once again Americans and now losers of the civil war. Thus marked the end of the
