Harrison's town believed in equality. This is why everyone had handicaps, so no one could be stronger than the other.
Kurt Vonnegut makes many observations on society and human kind. The reason he wrote this book was to talk about equality and why our world doesn't need it. He wanted people to see what it would be like if we were all equal. I believe this story could act as a suggestion or warning to the world about how equality isn't the best decision for human kind. Why would someone want to be the same as someone else. I think Vonnegut used handicaps to show us our useless equality is.
