- Hi my name is gurtrude Ederly and I grew up in new york, I was born in 1904, When I was young I had scabies, the doctor said I had no chance of making it, until I had the straight to fight it. When I got better I wanted to swim, just like my older sister (Meg). Since I wasn't alowed to go in the pool, so my dad tued a rope around me and helped me swim around the pier at a local beach five years later is where my story begins.

- This was me when I was 18 years old, I spent almost six hours in the water every day , I would sim dog patal around the pier, with my sister meg. My mother wanted meg and I to join a swim team (the only woman's swim team in New York) My dad on the other hand thought is was a bad Idea for woman to join a swim team, and it was worth two dollars for me and meg to sim, so my mother would sew decorations for hats to pay the small fee every month. I was the slowest in my team, but I was still determined to prove that I could win the swim meet next week against alstrailia. My first swim meet of the season, I still wasn't the fastest of my team but I could feel the energy, and the stress pumping throgh my hart. When the gun shot
