  • Semantics is the systematic study of meaning, and linguisticsemantics is the study of how languages organize and express meanings.
  • we use the term grammar tomean two things: the implicit knowledge that a speaker has and theexplicit description and explanation of it by the linguist.
  • Phonology is the knowledge, or the description, of how speechsounds are organized in a particular language
  • Syntax is the knowledge, or the description, of the classes ofwords, sometimes called parts of speech, and of how members ofthese classes go together to form phrases and sentences.
  • How can we explain the speaker’s knowledge of meanings? Certainlywe cannot expect that speakers can clearly define all the words theyknow.
  • the specific features of communication, beginning with observationsabout non-linguistic signs and how we get meanings from them.
  • We introduce a distinction between a sentence, a language construction, and an utterance, a particular act of speaking or writing. An utteranceis typically part of a larger discourse. In spoken discourse meaningsare partly communicated by the emphases and melodies that arecalled prosody.
  • Pragmatics is another branch of linguistics that is concernedwith meaning.
  • The linguist attempts to construct a grammar,an explicit description of the language, the categories of the languageand the rules by which they interact. Semantics is one part of the grammar;phonology, syntax and morphology are other parts.
