There are 2 forms of this bacteriumpathogenic strainnon-pathogenic strain
I am to develop a vaccine for pneumonia. Which is caused by a bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae

A live form of the pathogenic strain

A non-pathogenic strain

My experiment will be done with mice.
Heat killed pathogenic strain(bacteria)
Here is what I will inject into each of them

Live non-pathogenic strain
As expected Mice #1 died and Mice #2 lived. Mice #3 which had the pathogenic strain that I killed using heat, indeed did live and suffered no effects.

I was shocked at the results of Mice #4. I had injected a mix of the heat killed pathogenic bacteria with the live non-pathogenic bacteria. I had thought the mice would live because the pathogenic strain is dead BUT Mice #4 is dead.

TRANSFORMATION
I propose that one of the chemicals in the heat that was used to kill the pathogenic strain altered the live non-pathogenic strain. This caused it to be deadly.
I called this phenomenon of passing on genetic material transformation!
We will continue the work of Frederick Griffith and determine the the isolating agent behind the transforming principle

is it DNA or protein?

We will reproduce Griffith experiment. But, have one important difference

Mice #5 we will treat the bacteria with a protein destroying enzyme
Mice #6 the bacteria will be treated with a DNA-destroying enzyme
