  • No one food contains all of the nutrients necessary for a healthy lifestyle. Good nutrition requires that the proper balance and quantities of essential nutrients are obtained from a variety of food combinations.
  • Your dietary habits begin very early in life. The moment you start eating solid food as a child, your relationship with food begins. There are many factors that will affect your relationship with food as you move through life.
  • Obesityis a condition characterized by an excessive accumulation and storage of fat in the body. If a person's body weight is at least 20% higher than it should be, he or she is consideredobese. The Centers for Disease Control reports obesity in America has increased dramatically since 1985.A combination of physical inactivity and a poor diet high in saturated fats, simple carbohydrates and sugar can lead to obesity.
  • Healthy Nutritional ChoicesWhen choosing healthy foods, you want to make sure you choose nutrient dense foods. Nutrient dense foods are foods that have a high vitamin and mineral content. Foods like vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds are examples of foods that are nutrient dense.
  • Foods containing high amounts of trans-fats and saturated fats should also be avoided. Many processed foods, such as frozen pizza, fast food, and snack foods, have high amounts of trans-fats. Foods such as fatty meats, cream, butter, cheese, and whole milk are examples of foods that have high levels of saturated fats.
  • Unhealthy Nutritional ChoicesYou want to avoid foods that have empty calories in your diet. Foods with empty calories have sparse amounts of nutrients per calorie in them.Soda is a great example of an empty calorie food. Even if it is low or calorie free, you are still drinking compounds that have to be digested by your body.
  • Portion distortion is a term used to describe the increased portion sizes of already prepared food and the resulting expectations by the consumer. Most fast and prepared foods come in sizes that are much bigger than the average person needs to consume. It is important to read food labels and determine what a single serving size of a food is. Household items can be used to help visualize the portion sizes of certain foods. For example, a deck of cards is the same size as 3 ounces of chicken, a golf ball equals two tablespoons of peanut butter, and four dice is the same as one ounce of cheese.
