- In the 1700s and 1800s many African Americans were enslaved
- The slaves would work on a plantation and many got sold to a different plantation than the rest of their family.
- I just want to be free
- Many slaves became runaways

- The slaves tried escaping to the North or Canada where slaves become free.
- Slaves traveled at night when they couldn't be seen
- People who were involved in the Underground Railroad, called Agents, travelled to each plantation telling the slaves when the best time to escape was.

- People called Station Masters provided meals, clothing and refuge for the slaves at each station.
- A song called The Drinking Gourd explain where to go
- People called Conductors helped transport the slaves.

- A woman named Harriet Tubman, known as the moses of her people, helped many slaves cross the border safely.
- The code name for Canada or free land was Heaven because when they arrived there, they wouldn't have to be slaves anymore
- When the slaves were finally free, some settled in Canada and some decided to work with the Underground Railroad.
- Harriet Tubman was born into slavery then escaped and became a Conductor for the Underground Railroad. She also made 19 trips helping slaves escape.
