Montezuma treated Cortes with great respect beacuse he believed he was Quetzalcoatl. Montezuma was seeing visions of Cortes for years and his family had been waiting generations for someone to see a god. Once Cortes was found and was said to be Quetzalcoatl, Montezuma had to treat him well to not ruin the relationship from the god to a human.
