  • Hitler and His Disciples
  • I am Hitler, I will create a nation of Aryans who are the supreme race!
  • Hitler speaking on National pride to the people of Germany. Believing all will follow in his mindset that Aryans are the superior race. Spewing tales that Jews caused the Great Depression, and those who are not Aryan or follow in his orders are to be shunned.

  • Jews Hiding Out
  • It's alright, we thank you for your kindness.
  • I'm afraid my attic is the only shelter I can provide for your young family. I do hope you remain undiscovered. I hate that such kind people are criminalized.
  • Many German and Polish residents did not agree with the harsh treatment placed upon innocent Jews. Those who were willing to risk their own safety offered shelter to the frightened families made out to be less than dogs.

  • Anti-Nazi Paper Wars
  • The Nazis are searching everywhere for us. I heard that they took in 5 members just last Tuesday for questioning.
  • They are beginning to take anyone in for questioning, even the innocent.
  • A secret organization called The Red Orchestra, spread information to neighboring countries to give intel during the war. They put their lives on the line to act as spies, and spreading anti-Nazi posters to aid in the ending of the war.

  • Inside the Secret Organization
  • Your brother has been suspected of working with the West. This is a disgrace as he is a traitor to this nation. Cease all contact at once!
  • I knew that man was no good.
  • *gasp* Oh my, but he would never betray his family like this.
  • With many Stasi roaming the streets to catch spies, the members of the Orchestra had to get creative with their communications. Being watched any time they left their house they would have no choice but to cut contact with some members. Friends and family would also cut contact to members. Stasi police spread rumors about those deemed suspicious, isolating them from loved ones.

  • Risk of Fighting Back
  • HAHAHA!! Traitors are scum! they deserve death for their crimes.
  • He had a wife, and young children. This isn't fair.
  • Considered to be traitors, members of the Orchestra riled the Nazi officers into a frenzy to wrangle up those who were conspiring against their country. As suspicion grew, officers began arresting anyone who they deemed as a suspect and brutally interrogated them. Many were sentenced to death with little to no evidence to condemn them.

  • Warsaw Ghetto
  • Show us your papers!...These are expired!...What are you implying!...
  • Here they are...But I just got them 2 months ago...I didn't mean it like that...
  • This is getting out of hand. We need to do something.
  • During the time of Hitlers rule, many Jewish families were pushed out of their homes and forced into ghettos. Ghetto homes were very small, and everyday was terrifying for them to leave the homes. Gestapos arrested individuals for any small issue, or simply because they wanted to.

  • Preparing to Fight
  • Don't worry, we are standing our ground.
  • I won't stand for this treatment anymore.
  • We cannot allow them to take us.
  • Jews banded together to fight back against the Nazis. Making homemade firepower to be able to hold their own in battle. The Jewish Combat Organization was made in order to defend themselves against the brutal force of the Nazi officers. Bunkers were made in order to hide during pressing situations in which Nazis were gathering Jews to send to concentration camps.

  • April 19, 1943. Jewish Combat Organization begin the fight to push back against the Nazi officers. Short bursts of fighting following a swift retreat to bunkers, aided the Jews being corralled to flee from the trucks which would have taken them to camps and certain death. The fighting lasted for 27 days, even pushing the Nazis out of the ghetto temporarily.

  • Overpowered and Outnumbered
  • Even though the Jews fought back hard, losing many fathers, sons, brothers, and uncles in the midst, they lost. Nazi officers came back into the ghetto, burning most of it to the ground and collecting anyone in sight. Many Jews died fighting off the officers in order to protect friends and family.

  • Hiding in Fear
  • Don't worry Anja, these people are willing to hide us here until next week. They fear Germans will find us and kill them.
  • Vladek, I'm so scared! The gestapo will find us! They're everywhere, and stopping everyone!
  • Vladek and Anja hid in willing Polish households who felt guilty for the harsh treatment on the Jews. In fear of what might happen to the families, the Spiegelman's were sent back out onto the streets to search for new willing families. Between shelters, they had to evade detection from the Nazis, holding out for as long as they could, in hopes for a resolution to the war.

  • Rejection
  • Anja! I will not house any filthy jews here! You have 30 seconds to go before I call the Stasi! We are not friends!
  • But.. But.. We were friends. Please..
  • Please! Just for a night. We will freeze to death out here!
  • Though the Spiegelman's were lucky to get shelter when they could, many attempts at safety caused even more dangerous situations. Germans and Poles who were very fearful to be caught near a Jew, chose to unmask Jews in hiding for the sake of their families staying out of harms way from the Nazis. Even Jews who were once friends with Poles and Germans were sold out during the war.

  • Heroes in the Shadows
  • History may not always recognize those who contributed to aiding victims of war, or even those who majorly turned tables in the war. The fighters of the Warsaw ghetto uprising, the Red Orchestra, and simple civilians who didn't agree with the Nazi brutality helped to end the war. Many unfortunately, did not get to see what came of their sacrifices, but they are remembered and honored.
