The mood of the story is very ominous. Whitney said, “Sailors have a curious dread of the place. I don’t know why. Some superstition — ” In this quote, Whitney is explaining how there is a superstition of the area which they are in. The atmosphere in this scene is odd and suspicious.
CONFLICT
“Hardly. Even cannibals wouldn’t live in such a godforsaken place. But it’s got into sailor lore, somehow. Didn’t you notice that the crew’s nerves seemed a bit jumpy today?” In this example, Rainsford asked if there were cannibals, but he says no. Only that the crew was acting off. This is an event of foreshadowing because then Rainsford fell of the yacht and went to a odd island, after the comment about the crew being jumpy.
CLIMAX
Rainsford said to Whitney, “Who cares how a jaguar feels?” This is ironic because Rainsford was saying that he didn’t care how a jaguar would feel if it were hunted, but now he is the animal being hunted. Rainsford now is feeling what a jaguar would feel hunted.
RESOLUTION
“‘You’ll find this game worth playing,’ the general said enthusiastically. Your brain against mine.” In this quote the conflict is General Zaroff is going to hunt Rainsford, but he doesn’t want to. In the beginning, Rainsford wandered to this big house, but in return was a game. Rainsford has now entered a game that he must finish to leave the island.
“He heard the hounds. Then he leaped far out into the sea…” As Rainsford heard the pack of dogs and General Zaroff come, he jumped off the cliff to get himself away from all of it. This is the turning point.
“He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided.” In this quote Rainford has won the game and has slept in General Zaroff’s bed. When he said “He had never slept in a better bed” it meant that Zaroff had been killed. He was killed by his pack of dogs.
