  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: Jacob Story

  • Jacob is a 23-year-old man that has been living in this neighborhood his whole life, everyone knows him as the kid that helps everyone, however he helps because it bothers him that everything is not perfect.

  • When he comes home and sees a mess his son makes, he cleans it up quickly. He does not like seeing things everywhere.

  • When he cleans it takes it him about 2 hours just to make everything seem like he likes it, and this is a everyday thing. Seeing it a mess causes him distress

  • Even though it seems clean something is missing for his, it already turned night time and Jacob is still here. Something seems wrong for him

  • Jacob notices the bench is not straight and start fixing it right when entering his room, he was overthinking it and straightens it multiple times, this is known as Symmetry symptoms which is part of the OCD dimensions

  • Jacob was still here while his wife was sleeping trying to fix the bench, even though it looked straight. This disorder is taking up his sleep.

  • It was the next morning, and the wife tells Jacob "Why are you still awake" then he says, "does the bench look crooked to you" and the wife was so confused. The wife decided to do something about this, she notices something is wrong.

  • - People age from 18-29 have a higher chance of getting OCD -62% have a OCD disorder of checking and as for symmetry is 40% in where Jacob experiences- cleaning obsessively is also known as a type of OCD in where you feel distress when an environment is dirty causing you distress-OCD has a lifetime prevalence of 2-3%-OCD is more prevalent to female (1.8%) compared to male (0.5%)

  • Brochure
  • Mary, the wife, suggest putting a brochure of OCD so his husband can be aware of what can be happening to him. She knows forcing him is not the solution and it should be whenever he wants to

  • As Jacob reads the brochure, he realizes that all the symptoms shown here, he displays. He relates to everything here and decided to take action

  • The doctor tells them they are 2 treatments they can try, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and medicine. Exposure of the compulsion and medicine to control compulsion

  • Jacob decided not to try the medicine but try the CBT therapy to have exposure of the obsession. At first it was difficult and his obsession took over him.

  • A few months happened and he could control his emotions but sometimes it took over but progress was done. He brain didn't have much distress. It was hard but he resisted.

  • His very last frequent visit with the therapist and it went well. He wasn't distress with the mess and didn't want to fix it right away, it was manageable.

  • Jacob could now enter the messy toy room without immediately starting to clean, he now knows how to control his past obsession

  • The journey was a struggle, and it was a long one, however it was worth it. Jacob can now live life without having something disrupt it for hours
