In 1534, the French king sent an experienced sailor and navigator, Jacques Cartier, to find a quicker route from Europe to Asia. This route would become known as the Northwest Passage.

As Cartier was sailing west to Newfoundland, he entered a large gulf through a strait. He claimed the land for France.
Befor returning to France, Cartier discovered a waterway leading west from Newfoundland.

One year later, King Francis met with Cartier to have him map the waterway he discovered the previous year.

With the American Indians as his guide, Cartier sailed as far as he could and landed in present-day Quebec. Some of the American Indians came back to France with Cartier and told the king of the riches farther west.
In 1541, a third and final voyage was made by Cartier along with a large group of settlers. Their mission was to set up a French empire in North America. The trip ended with their return to France in 1542 after a harsh winter. Cartier had staked claim for France in North America. Sucess was made!
