- A long time ago, roses had no thorns. They were kept in palaces and courts to entertain the wealthy. One day, a farmer's daughter found a rose growing alone in the fields. The two struck a deal; if the girl could get the rose to the palace, the rose would help the girl and her family to rise out of poverty.
- The two went to the market and stole some expensive cloth. With the help of her parents, they stitched together a lovely dress. 
- The girl and the rose went to a celebration in the palace under the guise of a wealthy lady named "Alba." There, they tricked a noble woman who was engaged to the Queen's eldest son to leave the party. After her departure was discovered, "Alba" claimed that the woman must have gotten cold feet and cancelled her engagement. The Royal family was extremely upset, but rewarded Alba for coming forward with the truth. 
- The Queen, however, was suspicious of the girl, and ordered one of her servants to replace the water in the Rose's vase with vinegar. When Alba woke up the next day, the Rose was too sick to speak. Since the girl had been following the rose's directions and saying what it wanted her to say, she had no idea what to do.
- When it was time for the banquet, the Queen asked Alba some questions. Of course, the girl didn't know how to answer, and was caught. She told the Queen- and all the guests- the truth. The Queen forgave her, but decided that the Rose should be punished.
- The King and Queen declared that from then on, all roses would have thorns, so anyone lured in by their empty promises would get a taste of their true nature when they tried to pick them.
