- It jus' seems kinda funny a cuckoo like himand a smart little guy like you travelin' together.
- George and Slim came to the BunkHouse together they started talking about Lennie.
- He's a nice fella, He ain't mean.
- He's dumb as hell, but he ain't crazy.
- But he gets in trouble alla time because he's so God damn dumb. Like what happened in Weed-
- God Candy that dog stinks! He's stinking up the whole place, Why'n't you shot him, Candy?
- Then Carlson comes in and starts to persuade Candy into letting him shoot his old dog. Carlson goes far away to shoot Candy's dog, Candy is quiet, looking at the ceiling.
- I'll shot him for you. The way I'll shot him he won't feel a thing.
- "Awright--take 'im
- No, I've had this dog since he was a pup.
- Any you guys seen my wife?
- Next Curley came rushing in asking for his wife, then rushed out to the barn when he heard that Slim was there. When Curley left Carlson and Whit left after him to see if he and Slim would get into a fight.
- Where the hell's Slim?
- She ain't been here
- "Went out in the barn, been gone for 15 minutes
- When the others left George, Lennie, and Candy started talking about their future together.
- An' rabbits, ' I'd take care of 'em.
- "We'll fix up that littleold place an' we'll go live there.
- I bet we could swing her for 450, I'd get a job an' make up theres', an' you could sell eggs an' stuff like that.
- S'pose I wentin with you guys. Tha's three hunderd an' fifty bucks I'd put in.
- I could cook and tend the chickens and hoe the garden some.
- You keep outta this les' you wantastep outside.
- Slim, Curley, Whit, and Carlson came back from the barn, and Curley and Slim were arguing and the others jumped in.
- "I'm jus' tryin' to tell you I didn't mean nothing
- If you can't look after your own God damn wife,what you expect me to do about it? You lay offa me.
- Why'n't you tell her to stay the hell home where she belongs?

- Curley saw Lennie smiling and thought Lennie was laughing at him and started to fight him. Lennie was smiling because he was still thinking about the future, when he was hit by Curley he didn't know what to do. George told him to fight back, so Lennie grabbed Curley's hand and crushed it.
- You tol' me to, George
- We got to get him in to a doctor, Looks to me like ever' bone in his han' is bust.
- "I didn't wanta, I didn't wanta hurt him.
- "Leggoof him, Lennie. Let go.
- Leggo his hand, Lennie. Leggo.Slim, come help me while the guy got any hand left.
