- This is a desert!
- President Jefferson was looking for many ways to expand the U.S. territories. They bought it for $15 million from the french. That would be $342 million today.
- Stephen Long
- Throughout their 8,000 mile journey, 123 miles were spent in Kansas. They thought it was really beautiful, had a variety of game, deer seemed plentiful, and an abundance of raspberries.
- Jackson's Speech
- in 1806 Pike described the land as a desert. Zebulon was the first American to travel the territory by land.
- Indian Removal Act
- Stephen traveled by a steamboat and on the map he labeled the area for Kansas to become "The Great American Desert." That view of Kansas stuck and also influenced the us government's settlement policies.
- Jackson wants to make a change as in a country covered with forests and ranged by a few thousand savages to our extensive republic. Also filled with all the blessings of liberty, civilization and religion.
- The U.S. government didn't think Americans could form or survive because of the explorers description of Kansas. Tensions rise between tribes.
