- Gina was diagnosed with Microcephaly and SLOS, a genetic disorder which affects many parts of the body development. She has wonderful parents who advocated for her in the education system to ensure she got the education she needed and deserved
- After reading about Ginas life, it has come to my attention that administrators, educators, social workers, and doctors all doubted Gina's ability, and tried to steer Gina to a path that would not allow her to grow. If she did not have such a strong support system, she would not have been able to be where she is now.
- It is our job as educators to be the voice for our students when they do not have one. Not all parents have the courage or strength to push against the advice they were given by those who do nat have the childs best interest at heart, Here are four things that we as educators can do to ensure our parents can advocate for themselves and their children: * make parents and children feel safe in your classroom* allow them to voice their concerns and ask questions *hold meetings with administration when there is a concern a parent has brought to your attention*pay attention to your students and bring up any concerns with the parents
